Create a simple design

Start with a manageable drawing brief

A small drawing exercise gives you something concrete to finish and review. Choose a subject you can describe simply, then use the lesson video alongside your own original sketches.

Set a few boundaries

Write down the subject, the space available on the page and the main idea you want to communicate. Limit the number of elements for this exercise. The aim is to make deliberate choices, rather than to collect as many decorative details as possible.

Compare three small sketches

Make three quick versions with different arrangements of the same elements. Keep them small enough that you focus on overall shape and balance. Choose one to develop, and write a short note explaining why you selected it.

Keep the review useful

Compare the finished drawing with your original brief. Is the intended subject clear? Which area needs more work? Ask your trainer for feedback on one of those questions. Keep the early sketches with the finished version so the discussion includes your decisions, not just the final image.
