Separate the drawing from the trace

Use this lesson as a paper-based exercise in choosing which information belongs in a trace. Begin with a drawing you created or have permission to use, and keep the original visible for comparison.

Decide what you need to preserve

Identify the outlines and reference marks you need to recognise the design. On a separate sheet or digital layer, make a first tracing. Keep notes about any area where overlapping lines or small details make the result difficult to read.

Compare rather than guess

Place the trace next to the original. Check whether important shapes have moved, disappeared or become confused. Correct one section at a time and retain the first attempt so you can explain what changed. This exercise stays on paper or in your drawing software.

Prepare for the next lesson

Ask your trainer which marks are useful and which create unnecessary clutter. Follow your course instructions for any later stencil or practical work; a completed drawing exercise alone does not establish practical readiness. If the original design is too complex to trace clearly, return to the simplification lesson before starting again.
