Build the foundations before working with clients
Tattoo training involves drawing, equipment knowledge, hygiene, a repeatable working process and practical feedback. An attractive drawing is a starting point: you also need to learn how a design behaves when you practise the techniques used to create it. The current main tattoo course includes fine-line tattooing, blackwork and tribal, black-and-grey shading, traditional colour, watercolour and realism. Read the fine-line tattoo learning guide for design, practice and feedback preparation.
What to prepare for practical training
- Keep a small collection of your own drawings and practice exercises.
- Write down the skills you find difficult, such as consistent lines or controlled shading.
- Check the course equipment option before buying a second kit.
- Confirm the venue and available dates before arranging travel.

Online study and in-person practice
Online study lets you organise recorded lessons and assignments around your schedule. In-person training adds scheduled practical time with a trainer. Compare the actual course requirements rather than assuming a short attendance period represents the whole learning commitment.
During practice, photograph complete exercises as well as close-up details. A consistent record helps you and your tutor identify the next skill to work on.
